Risk Factors

Tobacco is the most important risk factor for laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers.
Moderate or heavy alcohol use can also increase risk for these cancers.
Other Risk Factors
- Human papilloma virus (HPV) – growing incidence of HPV related laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers
- Genetic syndromes (Fanconi Anemia)
- Workplace exposures to chemicals
- Age
- Gender
- Race
